Harnessing a microbial consortium and organic soil amendments to control verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae) in Olive plants (Olea europaea)

The use of chemical fungicides in olive disease management harms both the environment and human health. As a result, research is moving toward ecologically friendly control methods such as biological control, which have several benefits over chemical approaches. The current study’s objectives were to: (i) evaluate in vitro, the antifungal activity of Pseudomonas yamanorum and Trichoderma longibrachiatum, which form a microbial consortium against Verticillium dahliae; and (ii) assess the impact of compost and/or microbial consortium on the biostimulation and bioprotection of olive trees inoculated with Verticillium dahliae. The results showed that microbial consortia suppressed the mycelial growth of V. dahliae (< 1.80), according to the in vitro assay data. Furthermore, the detached leaf test findings showed that up to 80% of the symptoms of Verticillium Wilt (VW) were less severe when the microbial consortium was applied preventively to olive leaves. An in vivo, assay evaluated the effectiveness of a microbial consortium and/or compost on olive trees (cv. Chemlali) of various ages against V. dahliae. The results revealed significant improvements in growth and development parameters, including stem diameter (11.32 mm (A1), 11.56 mm (A2), 17.41 mm(A3)), plant height (67.67 cm (A1); 88.67 cm (A2); 111.33 cm (A3)), and leaf surface area. In addition, enhancements were observed in gas exchange parameters such as chlorophyll content (95.17 (A1); 106.43 (A2); 79.57 (A3)) and photosynthesis rate were improved by the preventive application of these two biological control agents either alone or in combination with compost. Additionally, the combined treatment of microbial consortium with compost enhanced the biological and physicochemical quality of the soil, activated the olive trees’ defense mechanism, and reduced the severity of the disease. In conclusion, the beneficial microorganisms and compost can be used in integrated disease management of Olive Verticillium wilt.
