<p>European chestnut (<i>Castanea sativa</i> Mill.) is the most abundant tree species in Asturian forests, covering 80,560 hectares. The most serious chestnut disease is chestnut blight produced by <i>Cryphonectria parasitica</i>, despite the fact that other fungi causing cankers have been described in recent years in this region (<i>Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi</i>, <i>Sirococcuscastaneae</i>, <i>Neofusicoccum parvum</i>, and <i>Neopestalotiopsis</i> sp.). The aim of this research was to evaluate the efficacy both <i>in vitro</i> and in wood of Hot Water Treatment (HWT) to control these canker-causing fungi. The temperature and time conditions tested were chosen taking into account that they did not harm the viability of the plant according to results from previous studies. Two types of tests were carried out, in vitro with the fungi in culture medium and in wood previously infected with the fungi. The results demonstrated that the treatment was effective in both tests, completely inactivating <i>Neopestalotiopsis</i> sp. in all the conditions tested. However, the wood assay was even more effective as none of the inoculated strains were recovered when the treatment was maintained for 45&#xa0;min at 50&#xa0;°C. Therefore, HWT could be an environmentally-friendly alternative for the control of fungi in wood chestnut in nurseries.</p>
