Oviposition preference and demographic parameters of stink bug, Halyomorpha picus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on different host plants

The stink bug, Halyomorpha picus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an important sucking pest that damages the economic parts of various crops. Establishing a sizable population of H. picus among different host plants is necessary to conduct year-round research. In this study, the survival and reproductive fitness of H. picus were assessed on five different hosts, viz. cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), arecanut (Areca catechu), french bean (Phaseolus vulagre), field bean (Dolichos lablab) and carrot (Daucus carota) under controlled conditions. The developmental period of H. picus in the nymphal stage (N1-N5) and adults varied among different hosts. It attained the fastest nymphal development on cowpea (29.9 days), and the slowest development was recorded on carrot (38.78 days). However, the adults lived longer on cowpea and laid the maximum number of eggs in both choice (37.87 ± 1.58 egg/female) and no-choice (113.60 ± 2.64 eggs/female) ovipositional assay. Similarly, the egg hatching (93.31 ± 1.56) and survival percentage (82.64 ± 3.60) were higher in cowpea followed by arecanut, whereas these were significantly lower in field bean and carrot, respectively. Age-stage-specific parameters also indicated higher fecundity, maximum life expectancy and higher survival of H. picus in cowpea than in the other four hosts. Similarly, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the net reproductive rate (R0) were highest (0.087 ± 0.76; 49.03 ± 6.95) on cowpea and lowest on carrot. These findings indicate that cowpea was the most suitable host for the mass rearing of H. picus under laboratory conditions.
