Identification of pearl millet as a major host of Leptodelphax maculigera (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), a potential vector of plant viruses

The African planthopper, Leptodelphax maculigera, is an invasive species recently reported in Brazil, associated with maize crops. It has been found carrying some maize viruses and mollicutes, suggesting its role as a potential vector, but information on its bioecological characteristics and transmission ability is lacking. Here, we assessed the occurrence of L. maculigera on several grasses in the field through sweep net collections and compared biological parameters of the planthopper on maize and pearl millet in laboratory assays. We also tested if L. maculigera transmits maize striate mosaic virus (MSMV), maize rayado fino virus (MRFV), maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBSP), and Spiroplasma kunkelii. The field survey revealed that L. maculigera was more frequent on pearl millet (83.5% of the specimens) than on maize and other grasses. In the laboratory, L. maculigera adult females showed higher survival rates when confined on millet (93% after 144 h) than on maize (only 10% at 72 h), yielding a progeny of nymphs two times higher, which completed their life cycle as adults only on millet. The adult honeydew excretion area on millet was about eight times higher than on maize, indicating much more active phloem feeding on millet. The transmission trials showed that L. maculigera can acquire but does not transmit MSMV and MRFV, while no acquisition or transmission of S. kunkelii and MBSP were observed. This study provides important, previously unknown bioecological insights, highlighting the need for further research to better understand the impact of this exotic planthopper on crops of agricultural interest and its management.
