Digital Storytelling to Support Socioemotional Development in Children: A Feasibility and Acceptability Study using the HappyYou App
摘要
Digital mental health interventions, including digital storytelling, offer a promising approach to supporting children's socioemotional development. However, the feasibility and acceptability of such tools for promoting socioemotional skills remain underexplored. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of using digital storytelling to support socioemotional skill development in young children, through the implementation of the HappyYou app. The study involved ten parents and fourteen children in England who used the HappyYou digital storytelling app over a six-week period. Parents were asked to engage with their children in reading one story per week. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at the end of the study to explore parental perspectives on the app’s effectiveness in supporting socioemotional learning. Descriptive data were gathered on app usage. Eight families completed all six digital stories, while two completed five. Parents generally reported that the digital storytelling format facilitated meaningful conversations about socioemotional topics and was both acceptable and engaging. They also noted that the stories provided accessible ways to introduce emotional concepts and behaviours. While parents contributed to the app’s initial thematic development, they recommended more involvement of children and families in future design stages. Digital storytelling interventions such as HappyYou show potential as foundational or complementary tools for fostering socioemotional learning in young children. They may be suitable for use at home, in educational settings, or within wider child development programmes. Further research should include more diverse samples and incorporate quantitative methods to evaluate specific mental health outcomes.
