Linking Nighttime Smartphone Location, Sleep Quality, and Depressive Symptoms in Bangladeshi Young Adults: The Mediating Role of Bedtime Smartphone Use
摘要
The objective of the present study was to assess the mediating role of bedtime smartphone use in the relationship between nighttime smartphone location and sleep quality, as well as between nighttime smartphone location and depressive symptoms. The study employed a cross-sectional design, recruited participants using a convenience sampling technique, and conducted an in-person survey on a sample of young adults in Bangladesh. Empirically validated standardized instruments and self-reported survey questions were used in data collection. The sample comprised 384 participants aged 16 to 21 years (M = 18.99, SD = 1.50). The results indicated that nighttime smartphone location was significantly positively related to sleep quality and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, mediation analysis revealed that bedtime smartphone use mediated the relationship between nighttime smartphone location and sleep quality, as well as the relationship between nighttime smartphone location and depressive symptoms. These findings highlight that keeping smartphones out of reach during sleep may help reduce sleep problems and depressive symptoms associated with bedtime smartphone use among young adults.
