Improving ADHD Treatment Attendance Through Teletherapy: A Quasi-experimental Analysis of Technological Features

Adults with ADHD often experience difficulties with executive functioning, impacting organization, time management, and adherence to schedules, which can affect therapy attendance. Teletherapy platforms like Carepatron offer features such as automated reminders, flexible scheduling, and multi-device access, which may help address these challenges. This quasi-experimental study investigates how these technological features impact attendance rates in teletherapy for adults with ADHD. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of teletherapy features in improving attendance and engagement during a 15-week program for adults with ADHD and to compare these results with attendance data from previous in-person therapy. The study also aims to explore the impact of these features across different ADHD subtypes and demographic factors. Forty-seven participants with ADHD completed a 15-week teletherapy program using Carepatron. Attendance rates during teletherapy were compared with previous in-person data. ADHD subtypes were classified using the ASRS. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, ANOVA, and regression analyses, assessed the impact of technological features on attendance. The study also explored the role of demographic factors, such as age and educational background, in influencing teletherapy outcomes. Teletherapy features, including automated reminders and flexible scheduling, significantly improved attendance compared to previous in-person therapy. Automated reminders were most effective for those with inattentive ADHD, while flexible scheduling benefitted participants with combined subtype ADHD. Bonferroni’s post hoc test results showed that the inattentive subtype had higher attendance rates than the hyperactive-impulsive subtype. Despite higher technology proficiency, younger participants did not show significantly higher attendance rates, highlighting the complexity of technology’s impact on therapy adherence. The findings support the effectiveness of specific teletherapy features in addressing executive functioning challenges and improving attendance among adults with ADHD. Personalized approaches considering ADHD subtypes and individual characteristics are crucial. Future research should focus on integrating emerging technologies, exploring subgroups’ specific needs, and assessing long-term impacts to further enhance therapeutic outcomes.
