<p>Sketching out forms and functions of representations of titles evoked by a&#xa0;variety of texts published or written between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 21st century, the paper focuses on the impact these mostly unexplored passages or chapters in essays or letters, anecdotes, lectures or books have on the theoretical concepts of ›title‹. Spreading their interest from mere discursive or typographical to social and material aspects of titles, such ›title stories‹ form elements of praxeological semiotics <i>avant la lettre</i> which challenges any typology of title forms, and provokes a&#xa0;revision of established parameters of both title theory and history. Texts on titles by Jean Paul, Theodor W. Adorno, Clayton Childress, Moriz Sondheim, Friedrich Schiller, Wolf Haas, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, and Werner Bergengruen, stage paratextual mediators situated in the literary field and concerned with practices of generating, cooperating, materialising and poeticising.</p>
