摘要

Two specimens (63.8–73.9 mm standard length) of a goatfish (Mullidae) collected from Jeddah, Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, and deposited in the fish collection of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden, the Netherlands, were identified as the Dotdash goatfish Parupeneus barberinus (Lacepède, 1801), based on the following combination of characters: eight dorsal-fin spines, 17 pectoral-fin rays, 29 or 30 total gill rakers, 27 lateral-line scales, two scale rows between the dorsal fins, barbel length 67.1–68.5% of head length, scales absent on all fin bases (except caudal fin), single rows of large teeth on each jaw, teeth absent on vomer and palatines, black stripe on snout, running through eye to below origin of second dorsal fin, round black blotch on lateral line at caudal peduncle, second dorsal fin uniformly pale, no distinct markings, and posterior end of maxilla not symmetrically convex. The species has not previously been reported from the Red Sea, although widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, including the Gulf of Aden. The two specimens are described in detail.
