Assessing the Demographic Characteristics and Exploitation Status of the Torpedo Scad, Megalaspis Cordyla (Linnaeus, 1758) Along the Gulf of Mannar Coast

This study investigates the demographic characteristics and exploitation status of the Torpedo scad, Megalaspis cordyla based on 1938 specimens measuring between 15.5 and 64.0 cm in total length. The specimens were collected from bottom trawl landings along the Gulf of Mannar (GoM) coast by simple random sampling between September 2023 and August 2024. Throughout the GoM fishery, M. cordyla was among the dominant and year-round landed species. Length-frequency data were utilized as input to the FiSAT-II software, facilitating a detailed analysis of population structure and growth trends. The growth parameters estimated using the von Bertalanffy Growth Equation revealed an asymptotic length (L∞) of 66.15 cm, growth coefficient (K) of 0.24 yr− 1 and theoretical age at fish length (t0) of -0.56 years. The fishing (F), natural (M), and total (Z) mortality parameters were estimated as 1.02 yr− 1, 0.55 yr− 1, and 1.57 yr− 1, respectively. Recruitment occurred continuously throughout the year, with two distinct peaks in January – February and October – November. The exploitation ratio (E = 0.65) was higher than the optimal threshold of 0.5, indicating that the stock along the GoM coast is currently being overexploited. To ensure long-term sustainability of the fishery, management measures such as mesh size regulations and seasonal closures are required to prevent overfishing.
