Northernmost Mediterranean Record of Lagocephalus cf. spadiceus (Actinopterygii: Tetraodontidae) From the Venice Lagoon (Adriatic Sea)
摘要
The Half-smooth golden pufferfish, Lagocephalus spadiceus, is a species of fish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. It is native from the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific Ocean and it can be found as a Lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea, although its presence and distribution in this basin are still debated due to its strong resemblance to L. guentheri, with which it has been at least in some cases misidentified. On 2nd September 2025, we recorded an individual hooked in the historic center of Venice during a recreational fishing session. Visually estimated at 20 cm TL, the fish was identified as Lagocephalus cf. spadiceus from photographs showing relevant diagnostic traits, such as a slightly lunate caudal fin lacking a medial posterior extension, with 2/3 of dorsal lobe yellow and 1/3 of ventral lobe white. This observation is potentially the northernmost documented record of the species for the Mediterranean Sea, and the first from the Adriatic Sea (Venice Lagoon).
