Link between Double-Diffusive Staircases and Water Masses in the Arctic Ocean

In the intermediate Arctic Ocean, double-diffusive staircases are located between water layers. Data from 2004 to 2023 in the Arctic Ocean were analyzed. As the potential temperature and salinity of water layers change, double-diffusive staircases are gradually becoming less distinct at the mooring location in the Canada Basin. The generation and destruction of staircases are closely related to the density ratio between water layers. It was found that the depth of staircases depends on the depth of an upper water layer, the density ratio of staircases is determined by the density ratio between water layers, and the heat flux of staircases is affected by the potential temperature of a deeper water layer.
