Distribution Ecology and Epifaunal Assemblages of the Cyanobacteria (Symploca hydnoides) Are affected by Abiotic Factors of Surface Water in Tropical Islands

Cyanobacteria are unicellular organisms that often form blooms and can also take the form of macroscopic algae such as Symploca hydnoides. However, the distribution ecology and faunal assemblages of these macroscopic cyanobacteria are limited in the Indian Ocean. Within this framework, this study aimed at assessing the distribution ecology and epifaunal assemblage of S. hydnoides from the intertidal habitats of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) of India. We also tested the correlations between physico-chemical parameters (salinity, water temperature, and pH) of surface water on the biochemical constituents (ash content, crude fat, carbohydrate, protein) and epifaunal assemblages of S. hydnoides. Significant variation (p < 0.05) in ash, crude fat, carbohydrate, and protein content was observed in S. hydnoides tissues across the six locations. Significant negative correlation (r = -0.78, p < 0.05) was observed between water temperature and the fiber content, indicating that an increase in temperature reduces fiber content of S. hydnoides. Canonical Correlation Analysis indicated maximum variational (75.6%) effects of water temperature, salinity, and pH on the amphipod and foraminifera assemblages of S. hydnoides across the six locations. Nine epifaunal taxa were recorded on S. hydnoides, with Amphipoda being the dominant taxon. Across the locations, Marina Park had the highest Margalef’s species richness (d; 2.346), Shannon-Weiner diversity (H’;1.822), and Simpson’s Index (1-λ; 0.754), with Kodiyaghat showcasing increased Pielou evenness (J’;0.815). This study highlights that the distribution ecology of S. hydnoides is affected by abiotic factors of surface water which needs to be monitored from the coast of ANI, India for assessing cyanobacterial blooms.
