<p>With the popularization of social media, millions of records are made annually. Some of these records can be part of the so-called citizen science, where the population produces data that are used for scientific purposes. The record of exotic species is an example of the application of citizen science, helping to report the occurrences of a non-native species and understand the establishment process. The shrimp <i>Penaeus monodon</i> is an exotic species that has been occurring in Brazil for 37 years. Thus, we gathered the records of <i>P. monodon</i> in Brazil available on social media and observed that the records have increased exponentially in the last four years, totaling 89 records. At the same time, there are only 12 records in scientific papers, highlighting the importance of citizen science in recording exotic species. We also observed that the <i>P. monodon</i> is already commercialized in several places in Brazil, revealing commercial interest and consumer acceptance. The Northeast region concentrates fishing and the Southeast region concentrates the commercialization of <i>P. monodon</i>, suggesting hotspots of the different activities.</p>
