Marine Geospatial Data Centre (MGDC): A Framework For Effective Marine Research Data Management In Malaysia

The optimisation of spatial data mapping and management is pivotal in advancing oceanography research and safeguarding marine ecosystems. An internal Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is needed for effective data management in an organisation. The main aim of this project is to establish an SDI for Pulau Bidong, Malaysia, utilising the Marine Geospatial Data Centre (MGDC) framework and a WebGIS platform for wider accessibility. Three primary concepts were formulated: Data Conditioning, Interoperability, and Enabling Technology. The framework was specifically developed following the Malaysia Standard MS1759:2015 rules on feature and attribute codes. In the absence of an existing coding scheme, novel codes were suggested. The code structure is distinguished by its distinct six-character code. A total of 40 datasets spanning from 2005 to 2021 were gathered to develop the internal SDI. The MGDC framework categorised datasets into two main types: Biotic and Abiotic. A Repositories Database and a WebGIS application were built to facilitate easy access for MGDC users. The study demonstrates the utilisation of SDI to enhance the accessibility of datasets. It also highlights the improved availability of metadata and provides insights into overcoming the challenges of developing an internal SDI by utilising existing data.
