<p>The south Indian coast and its estuaries are particularly vulnerable to cyclonic disturbances during the monsoon season. The tropical cyclones significantly impact the meiobenthic fauna, which constitutes the primary food source for the macrobenthic community inhabiting the interstitial spaces of sandy sediments. This study aimed to assess the effect of cyclones on the diversity of meiobenthic fauna at Veerampattinam beach and the estuary of Pucucherry coast by monitoring various hydrological parameters, faunal diversity, and abundance over an eight-weeks period before and after the occurrence of cyclones Nivar and Burevi between November 2020 and January 2021. A total of 27 species representing 17 meiobenthic groups were identified across both study sites, with Nematodes, Turbellarians, Harpacticoids, and Oligochaetes being the predominant taxa. A significant decline in meiobenthic density was observed, from 2288.89 ± 276.6 to 155.56 ± 38 Individuals/10 cm<sup>2</sup> at the estuary, and from 794.44 ± 187.86 to 111.11 ± 19.25 Individuals/10 cm<sup>2</sup> at the sandy beach, following the passage of Cyclones Nivar and Burevi. This decline was accompanied by notable fluctuations in salinity and nutrient levels. The results of this study indicate that recovery and recolonization of meiobenthic fauna occurred more slowly at the Veerampattinam estuary compared to the beach intertidal zone, likely due to habitat alterations caused by cyclonic events.</p>
