<p>This study evaluates the marine capture fisheries of Ratnagiri, focusing on ecosystem-based indicators, using data collected from the Mirkarwada landing centre. Trophic level-based indicators and trends in catch composition were analyzed over five-year intervals from 1999 to 2017. The assessment of total catch data based on trophic guilds revealed that under Criterion 1, ‘omni − carnivores’ dominated the catch (44%) while ‘top predators’ contributed the least (10%), with increasing trends observed for ‘herbi − omnivores’ and declines for ‘higher carnivores’ and ‘top predators’; under Criterion 2, ‘mid − level carnivores’ accounted for the highest catch (39%) and ‘omnivores’ the lowest (&lt; 1%), showing rising trends for ‘herbivores and detritivores’ and declining trends for ‘top predators,’ ‘high − level carnivores,’ and ‘omnivores.’ The Mean Trophic Index (MTI) exhibited moderate to strong declining trends over the 18-year period, ranging from 2.82 to 3.53, with a negative rate of change in nine years. The Fishing in Balance (FiB) index also declined, ranging from − 0.72 to 0.92, indicating a shift toward lower trophic-level species. Stock exploitation analysis of 33 species/groups revealed that 31% were ‘abundant,’ while 27% and 6% were categorized as ‘declining’ and ‘depleted,’ respectively. Declines in high-trophic-level species and reliance on lower trophic guilds highlight the need for sustainable fisheries management through ecosystem-based approaches using MTI and FiB to ensure long-term marine resource sustainability in Ratnagiri, Northwest Coast of India.</p>
