Mathematical modeling of mechanical unit operations in municipal solid waste processing for refuse derived fuel production: a literature review

The transition to a circular economy is intensifying the challenges associated with the mechanical treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW), as the efficiency of waste recovery pathways depends directly on the optimization of these individual processes. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive literature review on methods aimed at improving the technical, economic, and environmental performance of MSW sorting and pretreatment systems, thereby exploring the various issues addressed and the range of analytical approaches adopted for modeling and simulating these processes. This study provides an analysis of simulation models for mechanical treatment processes of MSW, presenting a comprehensive overview of design assumptions, operating parameters, and practical applications. Furthermore, gaps requiring future research have been identified regarding the development of flexible models capable of managing complex systems and optimizing material flows, while focusing on the real-time adjustment of machine parameters to compensate for stochastic variations in solid waste composition and operating conditions.
