Phytochemical investigation, antioxidant activity of Globularia alypum L. extracts, with Pearson correlation analysis between antioxidant potential and phenolic contents

The study aims to identify the bioactive phytochemical groups and assess the antioxidant potential of Globularia alypum L., a medicinal plant commonly employed in North Africa to treat various diseases. Dried leaf samples were extracted to obtain four extracts (chloroform, methanol, methanol 50%, and water extract). Classic phytochemical tests on the extracts were performed to highlight the presence of certain bioactive compounds, including Quinone, Terpenoids, Alkaloids, Steroids, Tannins, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, and Glycosides. The phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin levels, along with the extracts’ antioxidant activity, were determined. Results showed that among the tested samples, the methanolic extract presented the greatest levels of both phenolics and flavonoids, reaching, respectively, 470.74 ± 0.61 mg GAE/g and 22.75 ± 0.33 mg QE/g. In contrast, tannin level was highest in the chloroform extract. Among the tested extracts, the methanolic extract showed strong free radical-scavenging and high reducing activity. Meanwhile, the chloroform extract demonstrated the strongest hydrogen peroxide effect. Pearson’s correlation coefficient supported the strong antioxidant potential observed.
