<p>Diarrhea is among the common diseases affecting camel calves less than 3&#xa0;months old resulting in a high mortality rate and has devastating effects on the economic success of camel production. <i>Escherichia coli</i> (<i>E.coli</i>) strains exhibiting F17 fimbriae are frequently detected in diarrheic animals. This study aimed to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of <i>E.coli</i> F17 + infection in camel calves. Three 3-day-old camel calves were experimentally infected with 10⁸ CFU of <i>E.coli</i> F17 + . Prior to inoculation, none of the animals was infected with <i>E.coli</i> as screened with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Daily health status and fecal consistency were recorded individually by a point scale. Although experimental infection with <i>E.coli</i> F17 + revealed that camel calves developed signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, and dehydration from the first day after inoculation, diarrhea did not appear in challenged animals. Histological analysis showed lesions marked essentially by destruction of villous enterocytes and villous atrophy in small intestines and infiltration predominantly by polymorphonuclear leucocytes; despite the absence of diarrhea. Immunohistology examination showed adherence of <i>E.coli</i> F17 + strain to intestinal enterocytes in inoculated animals. These findings provide a clearer understanding of the pathogenisis of <i>E.coli</i> in camel calves, which could guide the development of preventive health measures aimed at improving camel productivity and ensure in pastoral economies.</p>
