Encapsulation of Eucalyptus maidenii (Muell 1890) essential oil using date seed polysaccharides for protection of stored grains against Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius 1792) under variable temperatures
摘要
The potential of storage temperature to create a good atmosphere for controlling stored product insects was investigated in laboratory conditions. This study evaluated the chemical composition, encapsulation efficiency, and insecticidal activity Eucalyptus maidenii (Muell 1879) EO encapsulated in a polysaccharide matrix derived from date kernel powder and gum Arabic via complex coacervation against Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius 192) a dangerous pest of stored grains at different temperatures namely 10, 25, and 40 °C. The extracted oil was analyzed for its chemical profile and tested for its insecticidal effects (EE %), loading capacity (LC %), and cumulative release (CR %) were quantified using UV–Vis Spectrometry. The fumigant toxicity of both crude and encapsulated EO exhibited high insecticidal activity against R. dominica adults, significantly reducing grain damage (33.51% at 40 °C after 90 d) compared to crude EO (98.46%) and untreated grains (100%). Moreover, treated grain retained better germination capacity, with encapsulated EO maintaining superior viability rates. Analysis of physicochemical properties, including moisture content, ash, protein, and lipid levels, showed minimal alterations due to treatment. These results indicated that encapsulating E. maidenii EO into polysaccharides extracted from date kernels enhanced its stability and insecticidal effectiveness, providing a promising bio pesticide alternative to synthetic insecticides for protecting stored grains.
