Evaluation, efficacy and function of essential oils from Lantana camara L. Morocco leaves for the antioxidant activity and as a bio-insecticide against the wheat weevil Sitophilus granarius in post-harvest crops

This study evaluates the antioxidant and insecticidal effects of essential oils (EOs) from Lantana camara L. (L. camara) leaves during three harvest periods: March (Mr), June (Jn), and September (Sp). The insecticidal activity was tested using a repellent and the direct contact methods, while the antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and FRAP (ferric reducing power) techniques. The EO extraction was carried out using Clevenger apparatus hydrodistillation. The EO characterization was determined using GC/MS. 45 chemical compounds were identified for each sample and are listed below. Some of the main compounds, for EO (Mr): α-Pinene; Tetralin-1-ol; Isoborneol, EO (Jn) Cyclofenchene; Limonene; α-Myrcene and EO (Sp): 6-Methoxy-α-Tetralone; Eucalyptol; Tricyclene. The yields from three samples (Mr, Jn, and Sp) are (0.15%, 0.2%, and 0.23%), respectively. The EOs from three samples were predominantly monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes, oxygenated compounds, and halogenated compounds, such as Bornyl chloride, Cetyl chloride, and 1-Chloroeicosane. The EOs were tested for the DPPH antioxidant test, which showed a high effect for month (Sp) followed by month (Mr) according to inhibitory concentration 50 IC50 values (IC50 = 21.08 ± 0.12 µg/mL, IC50 = 24.40 ± 0.11 µg/mL), and also for the FRAP method, the EOs from (Sp) and (Mr) showed a high reducing power. The EOs were evaluated for toxicity against Sitophilus granarius (S. granarius), and the results indicated that the EOs were effective in the two tests. The repellent test for the two EOs (Mr) and (Sp) had percentages (73%-70%) which implied a repellent effect of these EOs, whereas the EO (Jn) showed a very weak repellent effect. The Lethal Dose 50 (LD50) values for EO (Mr), EO (Jn), and EO (Sp) samples are 20.01 µg/mL, 18.33 µg/mL, and 14.95 µg/mL, respectively, compared to the positive control’s LD50 of 8.08 µg/mL. The findings revealed that the EOs obtained during the three harvest periods had a significant impact on wheat weevil control, as well as an antioxidant effect, with the exception of the June EO, which had an average antioxidant effect.
