Abstract <p>The present investigation undertaken in vivo, deals with the anti-hyperlipidemic effect and the antioxidative activities of the carotenoids extracted from the halophilic <i>Archaea</i> on male mice, fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) during 5 weeks. Compared to the HFD-fed group, the mice that received carotenoids exhibited a high potential in inhibiting the body weight increment. Interestingly, the carotenoids daily-oral administration improved dose-dependent lipid parameters and prevented the liver and renal dysfunction indices. In addition, the halophilic carotenoids restored the antioxidant status in the liver, kidney and heart by lowering the lipid peroxidation and increasing the antioxidant enzymes activities’ (catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase), under HFD-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, the histological study confirmed the carotenoids protective effects in the hepatic, renal and cardiac collected tissues. The overall results indicated that the carotenoids extracted from the halophilic <i>Archaea</i> are supportive in preventing hyperlipidemia complications, and this fact would be related to their important antioxidant properties.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>

Abstract
