Obstacles and Opportunities for Gender Inequality and Discrimination Against African Women
摘要
Gender inequality and discrimination persist in Africa, obstructing women’s rights and opportunities, as the continent is behind in attaining gender parity in social institutions, economic participation, and political representation. Regional disparities are evident, with North Africa demonstrating the highest degree of gender inequality. Despite established regional and international legal frameworks that promote gender equality, their enforcement and implementation are inadequate. Despite advances, significant efforts remain necessary to eradicate established biases and foster an inclusive society that empowers women and girls. This conceptual paper highlights the structural barriers that perpetuate gender inequality and discrimination against African women, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive reform. This study analyses the various obstacles and opportunities African women face within social institutions, economic sectors, and political environments. The findings highlight dimensions related to family, education, women’s health, gender-based violence, ownership and assets, civil liberties, the labour force, and leadership. The findings indicate that discriminatory laws, cultural norms, and restricted access to resources sustain inequality in women’s access to education, healthcare, financial resources, land ownership, and leadership roles. This research highlights the need for comprehensive reforms to address discriminatory practices, social norms, and insufficient legal frameworks to unlock Africa’s full socioeconomic potential through the empowerment of women.
