Utilizing natural Pozzolanas in sustainable concrete: a comprehensive review focused on Saudi Arabia

The high demand for sustainability in the construction sector has led to the exploration of innovative materials that enhance both performance and environmental responsibility. This comprehensive review focuses on the potential of locally sourced natural pozzolanas (NPs) in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as a sustainable alternative to Portland cement for concrete production. By identifying diverse sources of NPs across KSA, including regions along the Arabian Shield, highlighting the geological diversity and viability of these materials as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). The review precisely examines the compliance of these NPs along the various regions of KSA with ASTM standards, revealing significant variations in their chemical and physical properties based on geographical origin. Such variability necessitates thorough characterization prior to application in concrete. Additionally, the review investigates the physical, chemical, and microstructural characteristics of Green Concrete (GC) incorporating NPs, highlighting its role in reducing carbon emissions. By identifying gaps in existing literature and suggesting areas for further research, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of the capabilities of natural pozzolanas and their optimization in sustainable concrete production in Saudi Arabia.
