A laboratory study on interface layer failure in asphalt pavements using acoustic emission method

Given that asphalt pavements are occasionally constructed as two-layer systems or are repaired using asphalt overlays, the performance of these two-layer pavements and the identification of their cracking patterns are important to address pavement issues. Various methods have been used to study the performance of asphalt pavements at the interface. One such method, acoustic emission (AE), has been utilized in recent years to investigate how damage initiates and spreads in materials and recently in asphalt pavements. In this research, the AE method was first employed, along with a four-point bending test to evaluate the behavior of two-layer asphalt pavements with tack coat and without tack coat. The results of fatigue testing and AEs, including AE energy and cumulative events, demonstrated behavioral differences between samples with and without a tack coat in terms of fatigue life, crack propagation, and damage, particularly at the interface of the two layers. Additionally, computed tomography scan images of the samples after loading were examined, confirming the AE results. The comparison between the two states revealed the impact of the tack coat on the fatigue behavior of the asphalt mix. In addition, the results and observations clearly indicate that the acoustic emission method can be effectively used to evaluate the behavior of asphalt mixtures.
