Performance assessment of the Amritsar BRTS: integrating solar transition for carbon emission reduction

The Amritsar Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), considered to be a revolutionary urban mobility solution, has had difficulty achieving its goals, mainly attributed to inadequate planning, dissatisfaction of the public, and a lack of political continuity. This study focused on the challenge of reviving the BRTS Amritsar by incorporating stakeholder perception analysis with meticulous techno-economic modelling. A stratified sample of different stakeholders was surveyed to analyse public attitudes, with statistical analysis conducted via chi-square tests to identify demographic variation in support. The study conducts a comparative analysis to explore cost reduction and pollution mitigation by transitioning a fleet of 100 buses from diesel-powered to solar energy-powered operation, along with a detailed questionnaire related to the choice of transportation system. Cost and emissions models, grounded in operational data and validated assumptions, estimate up to 75% reduction in operating costs and substantial emissions savings, analyzed under different sensitivity scenarios. Analysis of successful BRTS systems (e.g., Curitiba, Ahmedabad) supports the design of practical policy recommendations. This study offers a strong framework for sustainable urban transport planning in Tier-2 Indian cities under the Smart City Mission.
