摘要

The utilization of waste fibers in construction has drawn keen attention due to their environmental benefits and superior mechanical properties. Coir fiber mat, constituted of fibrous coconut husks, is finding wide applications in the household sector and industries. The edge trims of these mats are a major waste generated during the manufacturing process, and industries are looking for ways to effectively recycle them rather than burning or dumping them in landfills. The primary objective of this research was to investigate the prospect of employing coir fiber edge trims as a sustainable alternative to conventional reinforcement materials, blended with grain granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as a replacement for cement, in the production of cement-bonded particle boards (CBPB). The results obtained from the experimental investigation were analyzed to evaluate the influence of coir fiber edge trims on the mechanical, physical, thermal, and acoustic properties of CBPB. CBPB comprising (0 and 40) % GGBS and 50% coir mat fiber manifested lower water absorption and thermal conductivity and, higher compressive and flexural strength. The potential benefits of incorporating coir fiber edge trims include enhanced bending and tensile strength, improved resistance to moisture, and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional reinforcement materials. This research was undertaken to assess the utility of coir fiber as a value-added sustainable construction material.
