<p>Traffic accidents are identified as a leading cause of injuries among children. School zones present a unique challenge as many children navigate potentially risky environments. Strategies to improve child pedestrian safety demand a multifaceted approach that goes beyond traditional engineering solutions and considers a critical element that is often overlooked, which is the perception of safety of child pedestrians. Understanding perceptions of child pedestrians regarding traffic safety helps in designing targeted interventions for addressing specific misconceptions and promote safe pedestrian behavior among children. The present study addresses this gap by analyzing child pedestrians’ perception of traffic safety near school zones in Bhopal City, India. Perception data was collected from 650 school children utilizing a questionnaire survey, initially consisting of 25 variables. After applying Principal Component Analysis, 13 factors significantly affecting the safety perception of child pedestrians were identified. These variables were then utilized to develop the Structural Equation Model. It was observed that out of five latent variables, pedestrian behavior emerged as the most influential factor, indicating that road safety interventions should not be restricted to implementing regulatory measures or improving infrastructure facilities, but also address behavioral aspects. Addressing risky behaviors through targeted interventions may help in developing accurate safety perceptions among child pedestrians, reducing the pedestrian injury risks. These findings provide insights on the series of factors influencing the traffic safety of child pedestrians, highlighting the importance of behavioral aspects in safety interventions and calls for collaboration between researchers, public agencies, and urban planners to create safer environments for child pedestrians around school zones. Identification of the complex interplay of factors affecting safety perception contributes to proactive measures for improving the traffic safety of children in school settings.</p>
