Navigating parking choices: drivers’ perspectives on parking guidance and information systems: a survey-based case study

Navigating urban environments and securing a parking spot has increasingly become a challenge for drivers, contributing to congestion and influencing travel decisions. Parking Guidance Systems (PGS) are designed to improve the management of urban traffic and optimize the use of available parking spaces. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Parking Guidance Systems (PGS) from parkers’ perspectives, with a focus on understanding user preferences, adoption barriers, and the impact of PGS on parking efficiency and urban traffic management. A survey was conducted among drivers in New Delhi district, collecting data on socio-economic characteristics, driving habits, and PGS usage. The survey examined preferences for parking information at both pre-trip and en-route stages, as well as drivers’ experiences with existing PGS. The results revealed that only 41% of drivers currently utilize PGS, with a notable 62% preference for mobile-based real-time information over traditional signage. Additionally, 54.6% of non-users expressed a desire for parking information accessible via mobile devices or strategically placed PGS at key intersections. The study highlighted significant gaps in the effectiveness of current PGS, with many drivers citing inaccuracies and outdated information as major deterrents. This research underscores the disparity between existing PGS functionalities and driver expectations, emphasizing the need for more dynamic, user-friendly systems that integrate real-time data across various platforms. The findings suggest that enhancing PGS with accurate, timely information could substantially improve user adoption, reduce parking search times by up to 40%, and alleviate urban traffic congestion. The findings underscore the potential of real time, user centric PGS to alleviate urban congestion and introduces the Optimal Parking Space Allocation Model (OPSAM) utilizing YOLO-v4 for real-time parking guidance, which enhanced parking efficiency and ultimately contributing to more efficient urban traffic management in New Delhi district.
