Fresh and mechanical properties of fiber reinforced self-compacted concrete with different types of recycled discrete fibers

Recycling plastics for use as discrete fibers in concrete mixtures within the construction industry represents one strategy to address the pressing issue of global plastic waste management, a challenge that has grown increasingly urgent in recent years. Based on this fact this study employed ten different kinds of waste recycled fiber with a fixed aspect ratio as reinforcing materials of concrete. Then the effectiveness of these materials in changing the fundamental fresh and mechanical characteristics of concrete. Experiments were conducted on a total of 14 distinct groups of concrete, with one of those groups without fibers known as a control. The other groups were either reinforced with a single kind of recycled waste fiber or a hybrid of multiple types of recycled waste fibers. The findings of the fresh state indicated that the addition of recycled fibers reduced the workability of concrete, specifically in the mixture with recycled fiber made from plastic bottles of water. Also, in the hardened state, it was shown that straws-derived fibers are effective in improving the compressive strength of concrete, while hybrid plastic chicken and cover wire together are effective in improving the tensile strength of self-compacted concrete.
