Homogeneous business and digital transformation
摘要
In the digital economy era, homogeneous business practices may constrain firms’ competitive advantages, driving them to pursue digital transformation as a strategy for differentiation. Based on theoretical analysis, this study employs text analysis and machine learning methods to construct firm-level indicators of business homogeneity and digital transformation using annual reports of Chinese listed companies. Our empirical investigation reveals that business homogeneity significantly promotes digital transformation. This effect is primarily achieved through optimizing firms' human capital structure and increasing uncertainty levels. Further analysis indicates heterogeneity in the impact of business homogeneity on digital transformation, varying with industry concentration, operational dispersion, and labor intensity. This study enriches the measurement of business homogeneity, extends research on the drivers of digital transformation, and offers novel perspectives for firms to develop differentiation strategies.
