Navigating the College Experience: the Role of Character Strengths among Undergraduate Students at a University in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
摘要
Recognizing and leveraging one’s core strengths can enhance students’ college experience. Research on identifying and applying signature character strengths in relation to the experiences of Nigerian college students is limited or virtually nonexistent. The study explored how students’ signature character strengths influence and shape four key aspects of their college experience: coping with life challenges, fostering relational growth, enhancing academic pursuits, and maintaining physical and mental health. In this study, 20 students from a Nigerian university participated in a brief workshop designed to cultivate character strengths. Following the session, students engaged in a week-long exercise where they identified and applied their signature strengths across four key areas of college life. A qualitative analysis of their reflection uncovered a diverse array of character strengths that participants used to navigate personal challenges, build meaningful relationships, succeed academically, and support their physical and mental well-being. These findings offer valuable insights for college administrators, educators, mental health professionals, and researchers.
