A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Evaluating the Feasibility, Effectiveness, and Acceptability of the Reflective Time Journal (RTJ) and Time Awareness Coaching (TAC) Interventions to Support Hybrid Workers’ Work-Time Practices and Wellbeing
摘要
Increasing rates of employee mental health challenges highlight the need for effective, evidence-based workplace wellbeing initiatives. Time-focused interventions are particularly relevant as time-related challenges are frequent workplace stressors and threaten health and wellbeing. This pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and acceptability of two novel time-focused interventions - the Reflective Time Journal (RTJ) and Time Awareness Coaching (TAC) – to support hybrid workers’ work-time practices and wellbeing. Professional coaches were trained to deliver the TAC intervention. Hybrid workers (N = 67) were randomised to the RTJ (n = 22), TAC (n = 23), and control groups (n = 22). Participants completed pre-post intervention measures of chronic time pressure, perceived control of time, self-efficacy, perceived stress, and wellbeing and provided feedback on their intervention experiences. Of the 67 participants who began the trial, a total of 22 participants (32.8% retention) completed their respective intervention. Key feasibility challenges, such as retention, are discussed, with recommendations for future studies. Mixed between-within analyses of variance indicated that the TAC intervention group experienced a decrease in chronic time pressure from pre-intervention to post-intervention. The results further indicate that all three intervention groups experienced a decrease in stress and increase in self-efficacy. Reflexive thematic analyses (RTA) of coaches’ and participants’ post-intervention feedback captured positive perceptions of the interventions to facilitate meaningful insights and behaviour change. Findings contribute preliminary insights with implications for future implementation of time awareness strategies to support wellbeing.
