<p>Half-bulb under-reamed piles are piles with expanded base which resembles the top half of the normal bulb of a single under-reamed pile. This design helps reduce the quantity of material required and reduces the construction time compared to single under-reamed piles. The present study investigates the behavior of half-bulb under-reamed piles, single under-reamed piles, and uniform cross-section piles in saturated marine clay soil under both compressive and uplift loading conditions. A series of laboratory model pile load tests were carried out by varying the clay moisture content and soil-pile interface interaction. Numerical analysis using PLAXIS 3D Ultimate software revealed that half-bulb under-reamed piles exhibited better performance in compression compared to single under-reamed piles and showed nearly equivalent uplift resistance. At conditions similar to field conditions, the half-bulb under-reamed piles outperformed the uniform cross-section piles by 81% in compression and 84% in uplift respectively. With approximately 11% less material usage than single under-reamed piles, they offer both efficiency and economic benefits without compromising the performance in marine clay environments.</p>
