Evaluation and optimization of light environments for typical art and design classrooms in university buildings

Comfortable light environments are crucial for enhancing student productivity and health, particularly for design students who spend a significant portion of their day in the classroom. This study conducted an in-depth evaluation, analysis, and design of the light environment in a typical classroom in Beijing. From the perspectives of indoor visual comfort and students’ working emotional feelings, a questionnaire-based survey was carried out, and a light environment evaluation method for university educational buildings based on the analytic hierarchy process-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method (AHP-Fuzzy) was established. On this foundation, the existing issues in the classroom’s light environment design were studied and summarized through simulations of natural and artificial lighting, comparisons with on-site measurements, and analyses of evaluation results. The study reveals that the significant and often overlooked problems in classroom light environment design include: (i) uneven distribution of natural light; (ii) poor uniformity in luminance distribution; and (iii) difficulties in connecting outdoor views with indoor spaces. Potential improvements are proposed to achieve superior visual comfort in design classrooms in Beijing and other areas with similar educational architectural characteristics.
