Recycled and waste materials in construction in Bolivia: a systematic literature review

This research analyzes the current state of studies, applications, and challenges associated with the use of recycled and waste materials in civil construction in Bolivia through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with a bibliometric and thematic approach. Databases such as Scopus and Web of Science were utilized, complemented by Google Scholar and the snowball technique due to the limited availability of specific studies. A total of 18 relevant publications were selected, and VOSviewer was employed for bibliometric analysis to identify research trends, key authors, and recurring keywords, while a thematic analysis was conducted to classify materials and applications. The findings reveal a sustained increase in scientific production since 2016, highlighting recycled and waste materials such as recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), rice husk ash (RHA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste, among others. These materials are categorized into four main groups: construction and demolition waste (CDW), industrial waste, agro-industrial waste, and polymeric waste, showcasing their potential to reduce environmental impact and promote a circular economy. The study emphasizes the increasing emphasis on sustainability in construction in Bolivia and highlights the urgent need to develop specific regulations, optimize recycling processes, and evaluate environmental benefits to establish recycled materials as a sustainable alternative in the industry.
