Cognitive NOMA Systems with Energy Scavenging Receivers: Performance Analysis

Cognitive radio (CR) emerges as a pivotal wireless communication technology tackling spectrum scarcity and inefficient spectrum utilization. Additionally, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) further improves CR networks (CRNs) by transmitting several user signals concurrently in a superposition manner. Also, energy scavenging (ES) from radio frequency (RF) sources enhance energy efficiency and guarantees green communication for cognitive NOMA systems (cNOMA). However, performance analysis for cNOMA with ES receivers (ESRs) accounting for imperfect successive interference cancellation (iSIC) decoding, where NOMA receivers are capable of power splitting for ES and information processing (IT), and relatively general Nakagami-m fading is still an open problem. This study conducts such an analysis. It is shown that cNOMA with ESRs is more productive than cognitive orthogonal multiple access (OMA) networks with ESRs in spectral efficiency.
