A Dual-Polarized Slotted Waveguide Array Antenna with High Isolation and Low Cross-Polarization

This article presents the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of a dual-polarized slotted array antenna for radar applications. The proposed antenna operates in the X-band, covering 9.5–9.7 GHz (S11 ≤ –10 dB) for vertical polarization and 9.2–9.7 GHz (S11 ≤ –13 dB) for horizontal polarization. The novelty of this work focuses on the development of a dual-polarized slotted waveguide array antenna with non-inclined radiation slots unit cell with two irises and an innovative corporate feed network utilizing curved waveguides to minimize mutual coupling and fabrication complexity for horizontal polarization. Such a configuration provides high isolation, broad bandwidth, and high gain. Through unit cell optimization, the designed antenna achieves cross-polarization levels below − 40 dB and antenna isolation exceeding 47.5 dB. The array configuration consists of 10 × 10 elements for vertical polarization and 12 × 10 elements for horizontal polarization, delivering peak measured gains of at least 26.47 dBi and 27.03 dBi, respectively, across the operational frequency band. The experimental results validate that the antenna exhibits remarkable electromagnetic performance and mechanical stability, which is applicable to radar imaging.
