An Improved Method of Analysis for Continuous Concrete Beams as a Replacement for ACI 318 Coefficient Method
摘要
The research involves reevaluation of ACI 318 method specified for analysis of continuous concrete beams by comparing its results with results of elastic analysis using ETABS software and trying to achieve a more accurate method. The comparison showed that ACI 318 method is conservative in most cases of bending moments and shear forces within the continuous concrete beams and fairly unsafe a few times, and it does not take into account the effects of important parameters that affect the results of the analysis. It is concluded that there is a need to formulate a new approximate method that is more accurate. A new method is proposed based on presenting a set of equations that can be used to compute coefficients for all bending moments and shear forces. The new expressions are simple formulas and functions of column stiffness to beam stiffness ratio, live load to dead load ratio, adjacent span lengths ratio, and number of spans. Regression analysis is used to find the coefficients of the new expressions based on the analysis of about 700 theoretical samples of continuous beams using ETABS software. The statistical values showed good convergence between the results of the proposed equations and the results of the analysis for different cases, where the average values of the ratio between the two results approached unity with small values of the coefficient of variation.
