<p>We examined the fluctuations in the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the bed sediment of the Ganga River at ten sites, along 210&#xa0;km span between Kanpur and Prayagraj. We utilized an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) for metal analysis. The Ganga, India’s largest river, poses a serious threat to both people and the environment. Sediment samples were collected in the summer of 2021 after the relaxation in Covid-19 lockdown. Metal concentration averages are noticed in the following order: Fe &gt; Mn &gt; Cr &gt; Zn &gt; Ni &gt; Pb &gt; Cu &gt; Cd. High heavy metal concentrations are measured at mid locations i.e., Dalmau Bridge, Unchahar, Nawabganj and Manikpur as compared to other locations. Pollution indicators used in this study indicate moderate contamination by Pb and Cd metal. Relative mobility of metals calculated in the following decreasing order: Mn &gt; Cr &gt; Pb &gt; Zn &gt; Ni &gt; Cu &gt; Cd. A comparative study of Ganga River sediment with the previous data of 2019 indicates the reduction in concentrations of all metals. This can be attributed due to the complete shutdown in the country during 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19. This also indicates the self-healing capacity of the Ganga River. Further, to prevent the river from further degradation industrial waste containing metals should be treated before disposal to protect the river from further degradation.</p>
