Comparing Different Construction Methods of Concrete Arch Pre-supported System for Double-Deck Subway Stations (Case Study: Isfahan L2-1 Station)

The Concrete Arch Pre-supported System (CAPS) is a shallow tunneling technique frequently used in Iran for the construction of underground subway stations. There are four alternative methods widely used to construct a double-deck CAPS. The purpose of the present study is to use numerical modeling to compare these CAPS construction methods for the L2-1 station in Isfahan. It was found that using long continuous piles instead of two-row shorter piles in CAPS significantly (approximately 40% on average for the L2-1 station) reduced surface settlements. The concrete slab control lateral soil pressure more effectively than using steel struts, resulting in less wall deflection. Maximum positive and negative bending moments in piles occurred at their connections to the concrete slab and the foundation, respectively. Furthermore, based on the results of the parametric study regarding the potential risk of damage to surface structures, it was revealed that all CAPS construction methods for medium dense sand and medium stiff clay soils were categorized as high risk, while they were classified as slight risk for gravelly soils. Moreover, construction methods using long continuous piles lead to a lower risk level in dense sand and stiff clay soils.
