摘要

Integrating carbon dioxide (CO₂) into concrete formulations reduces its carbon footprint and promotes the production of ecologically sustainable concrete. This study presents optimal industrial findings derived from an extensive experimental investigation involving numerous trial batches and specimens with varying CO₂-to-binder ratios. These specimens were tested to evaluate concrete flowability (at different intervals for initial and extended deliveries), uniformity, strength, and corrosion resistance (via soluble chloride content and chloride ion permeability tests). Additionally, acid-soluble sulfate content in the concrete mixes was quantified. The test results, combined with an environmental assessment, demonstrated that incorporating CO₂ into concrete significantly enhances both the properties of concrete products and environmental sustainability. Notably, the strength of CO₂-enhanced concrete with reduced Portland cement content increased by approximately 20% compared to the control mix without CO₂. CarbonCure and the Saudi Standards, Quality and Metrology Organization (SASO) are collaborating to classify CO₂ as a specialized concrete additive under ASTM C 494 Type S: Specific Performance Admixtures. In the near future, CO₂ utilization in concrete is expected to involve the direct attachment of pressurized CO₂ cylinders to ready-mix concrete trucks.
