Innovating the Casting Workforce Training with the Weeklong Bootcamps
摘要
Casting is among the oldest yet most essential manufacturing processes, serving critical roles in the automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors. Despite its continuing industrial relevance, educational programs offering hands-on training in this process remain limited. To address this gap, a strategic partnership was established between Tennessee Tech University and IACMI-The Composites Institute to develop the future American casting workforce. This collaboration launched a series of intensive, weeklong bootcamps designed to immerse participants in casting through experiential learning. The bootcamps combined hands-on laboratory sessions, expert-led lectures, industry plant tours, daily assessments, and instruction in design-for-manufacturing principles. This paper presents the structure, content, and outcomes of these bootcamps, highlighting participant feedback, assessment results, lessons learned, and recommendations for sustainable workforce development in metal casting.
