Assessing the Effect of Solutionizing Parameters on the Microstructure and Hardness of Cast Cu–Sn Bronze Alloy
摘要
Solutionizing is a critical heat treatment process in which a metal alloy is heated to a temperature, just below the solvus point, but not necessarily below the melting point and sustained at that temperature for a set period of time so that one or more constituents enter into a solid solution followed by rapid quenching for maintaining the homogeneous structure. Studies focusing on the influence of heat treatment, specifically solutionizing, to improve the performance of cast Cu–Sn alloys have been very few. This study investigates the effect of solutionizing temperature and time on the morphological characteristics and hardness value of cast Cu–6Sn alloy. The alloy samples were subjected to solutionizing temperatures of 780 °C, 820 °C, 860 °C at holding times of 3 h, 6 h, 9 h and 12 h. The hardness of Cu–Sn alloy under different solutionizing conditions showed an increase of 22–40% when compared with as-cast Cu–Sn alloy. Optimum solutionizing time for the cast Cu–Sn alloy was identified as 6 h and the optimal solutionizing temperature was determined to be 780 °C.
