<p>Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207–1273), the Sufi seer-poet, is known for his liberal mystic poetry, which deals with the esoteric aspects of Islamic religion. His poetry stands as a contrast with the contemporary conservatism in the Islamic world. While, Sri Aurobindo (1872–1950), a politician and mystic poet-philosopher of the last century, revived the voice of the 13th-century Sufi poet in his poetry and philosophical treatises. Both Rumi and Sri Aurobindo envisioned a world governed by love and harmony and they knew that it could only be attained through cosmic consciousness by helping human beings to transcend their egoistic impulses and to become selfless and altruistic. Love is a dominant metaphor in their poetry, a love that evolves from personal to universal, helping the individual to realise the feeling of harmony and unity. Hence, the present paper is premised on Rumi’s <i>Divan-e-Shams</i> and <i>Rubaiyat</i> and Sri Aurobindo’s sonnets, lyrics, and some major treatises to analyse the dynamics of love in detail and its progress to a feeling of cosmic love and integration. The theoretical framework of this analysis is based on various perspectives on love and its transformation from sensual to spiritual.</p>
