Exploring the Efficiency of Indian Banking Sector: Insights from Meta-frontier Analysis
摘要
This study investigates the efficiency of commercial banks operating in India, focusing on the diversity across ownership categories: public, private, and foreign. Utilizing data from 2005 to 2023 and employing the true Stochastic-Meta-Frontier model, the analysis aims to determine if these banks share a common efficiency frontier. The findings underscore significant heterogeneity among banks based on ownership structures, leading to distinct frontiers for efficiency evaluation. It highlights the inadequacy of relying on a common frontier across ownership groups, as this can yield misleading results due to variations in characteristics and operational strategies. Moreover, employing meta-revenue efficiency estimation, the study reveals that private banks exhibit the highest mean efficiency, leveraging superior technologies to enhance revenue, while foreign banks demonstrate the lowest mean efficiency. This research contributes to the literature by addressing the oversight of different frontiers among ownership groups and pioneering the estimation of Meta-revenue efficiency in banking efficiency analysis.
