Nematode diversity associated with coconut biotypes in the Dominican Republic

We aimed to characterize the nematode communities associated with coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) in the Dominican Republic. From the sixty-nine samples, 27 soil-infesting nematodes and 5 root-infecting nematodes were identified, including 10 plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) and 17 free-living nematodes (FLNs). High density and prevalence values of PPNs associated with the crop rhizosphere (Helicotylenchus, Tylenchus, Rotylenchulus, Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus) and FLN (Rhabditis, Aphelenchus, Trypila and Dorylaimus) were found. In the dominance analysis, the results showed that coconut biotypes have a strong influence on the density of the nematode community. Specifically, 25 genera were recorded in the Tall biotypes, 20 genera in the Dwarf biotypes and 17 genera of nematodes were recorded in the Hybrid biotypes. The most dominant PPNs were in the genera Helicotylenchus, Rotylenchulus and Tylenchus, while the FLNs were Aphelenchus, Dorylaimus and Rhabditis. Correspondence analysis revealed patterns of association between biotypes and genera in different dimensions. The p-p 2 and p-p 3 groups of PPNs, as well as the c-p 1 and c-p 2 groups of FLNs, presented the highest percentages among the biotypes. Knowledge on the ecology and diversity of nematodes and their trophic group associated with coconut palms will serve as a basis for future management strategies and other research in the Dominican Republic with coconut.
