Identification of stable leaf blast resistant genotypes in a diverse panel of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) using AMMI and GGE analysis
摘要
Blast caused by Pyricularia setariae, is the most common and economically important disease of foxtail millet triggering significant loss of production in many countries including India. Use of resistant cultivar is the most economical way for management of this disease. Identification of stable sources of resistance is of utmost importance to develop blast resistant varieties against Pyricularia setariae. In this study, a panel of 183 foxtail millet genotypes were evaluated in replicated field trials for LB (leaf blast) resistance across six environments (E) representing major foxtail millet areas in India during rainy season of 2021 and 2022. Twenty-six genotypes exhibited LB resistance better or equal to the resistant check ISe1745 and these genotypes were selected as superior LB resistant genotypes. These, along with a few susceptible genotypes were further analyzed for stability of resistance using the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis. Suitable environment for screening for LB resistance was identified using GGE biplots for discrimination versus representativeness of environments. Highly statistically significant effects of genotype, environment, and genotype × environment interaction (GEI) was observed for LB resistance. The genotypes accounted for 51.6% of the total sum of squares (SS) whereas E and GEI accounted for 7.3% and 41.1% of SS. Based on selection index three genotypes (G149, G169 and G150) were selected as top performers on resistance and stability and were better than the presently used national check ISe1745. Bengaluru was identified as most suitable environment for screening for LB resistance in this crop. This was the first study, in which large number of genotypes was tested for LB resistance over multiple locations in India. This paper reports stable sources of LB resistance in foxtail millet, which will serve as important donor in a resistance breeding program.
