Are rot-causing Botryosphaeriaceae species surviving in healthy Manihot esculenta propagative material in Brazil?

The aim of this study was to identify latent pathogens of the Botryosphaeriaceae family, associated with black root rot and stem dry rot, in asymptomatic or healthy propagative material (stems) of Manihot esculenta in Brazil and test their pathogenicity.. Fungal species were identified by phylogenetic analysis of the regions ITS, TEF 1-α and RPB2. Three species were identified—Lasiodiplodia euphorbiaceicola, L. theobromae and Neoscytalidium dimidiatum—integrating fungal endophytic communities in M. esculenta plantations in the state of Pernambuco (Brazil). Pathogenicity tests confirmed the capacity of the Botryosphaeriaceae isolates obtained to cause lesions in M. esculenta. Lasiodiplodia euphorbiaceicola, L. theobromae and N. dimidiatum are recognized as pathogenic for M. esculenta, responsible for causing black root rot and stem dry rot in this crop in Brazil and other countries. However, this is the first study to isolate these latent pathogens in M. esculenta healthy propagative material in Brazilian plantations and test its pathogenicity in this host, showing evidence that these Botryosphaeriaceae can survive as pathogens or latent pathogens in this crop in Brazil.
